ESL Speaking Activity

Grade Level: 6-8 Grade

Proficiency Level:  Beginner  

Goals:

  • Assess students English speaking skills in a question and answer format

  • Provide students a chance to practice speaking in small groups

  • Assess speakers proficiency in fluency and complexity of spoken sentences

  • Provide students with visual aids to form sentences to ask and answer questions

  • Provide students with vocabulary to use in the activity based on the visual aids provided

Pre-Speaking:

  • Review Vocabulary with visual aids

    • Vacation

    • Trip

  • Camping

  • Camp fire

  • Tent


  • Amusement Park

  • Roller Coaster

  • Ride


  • Beach

  • Swim/Swimming

  • Boardwalk



  • Explain the activity to the students

  • Put students into groups of three and assign one image to each student in the group

  • Answer questions students may have about other things associated with the images

  • Allow students five minutes to review vocab and visual aids in order to form questions about the images

Speaking:

  • Students will take turns in groups of three to explain what a vacation is like in the location from their visual aid

  • They will explain or describe activities based on the vocabulary with each image

  • Group members will then ask questions about the students personal experience or opinion on each image

  • Allow for 10-15 minutes for the activity, giving each student up to five minutes to explain their vacation destination and answer the groups questions

Post-Speaking

  • Have each student write what was shared about the visual aid by their group members

    • Should include the three vocabulary terms for each visual aid

    • One thing their group member shared about their experience or opinion on that type of vacation/trip

  • Students in each group will then present their work in front of the rest of the class
